Background and Update
As folks have been relaxing and enjoying the summer in July and August, the Designer Selection Committee (DSC) has been working diligently with the Department of Senior Services, the Parks & Recreation Department, and the Public Buildings Department to identify the best candidates for Owner’s Project Manager (OPM), and Designer for the NewCAL project.
The DSC received qualification submittals from five OPM firms. After careful deliberation, the DSC invited the top three firms to interview. Based on the interviews, final deliberations and scoring, the DSC recommended the top-ranked firm, NV5, to Mayor Fuller as the best candidate to meet the City’s needs for project management services. NV5 has been successfully providing OPM services to the City of Newton’s three recent elementary school projects and demonstrated relevant experience with senior and community centre projects.
In similar fashion, the DSC received and reviewed qualification submittals from five architectural firms to provide design services. The DSC invited three firms to interview and recommended Steffian Bradley Architects (SBA) as the best design candidate for NewCAL. Steffian Bradley most recently completed the Lexington Senior & Community Center.
Mayor Fuller concurred with the DSC’s recommendations and both firms have been brought on board. Throughout August the team has been working with Senior Services, and Parks & Recreation to understand their current programs and existing facilities, working to develop information gathering methods such as questionnaires, Listening Sessions, and Open Office Hours which will be used to engage the community and help to shape the programming for the future NewCAL facility.
In addition, the team created this project website which can be accessed through the Senior Services, Parks & Recreation and Public Buildings home pages. The team is also working on a schedule for the Facilities Programming Phase which will kick off in September.
